The Professionals at Morris-Depew Associates, Inc. have provided civil engineering, land planning, and expert witness services since 1989. More recently, we have provided landscape architecture—along with surveying and mapping services—to fully satisfy the needs of our clients.
MDA is a full service professional consulting firm with in-house capabilities for all phases of land planning, civil engineering, landscape architecture, and surveying/mapping. Client service is MDA’s specialty, and the firm’s efforts are based on a multi-disciplinary and collaborative approach to the planning and design processes, emphasizing interaction among allied professionals in conjunction with the client’s ultimate objectives. We have successfully provided these services to a wide variety of government agencies, property owners, real estate developers, architects, and contractors.
Morris-Depew Associates has grown to be one of the most well respected firms in Southwest Florida. To better provide statewide service in the areas of growth management and hazard mitigation, a Tallahassee office was opened in July of 2005. Most recently in 2014, we opened an additional office in Destin, located in the Panhandle of Florida.
President, Principal, and Co-Founder David W. Depew, PhD, AICP, LEED® AP, brings with him more than 35 years of experience as a county development director, planning consultant, and expert witness and litigation support. Dr. Depew has been qualified as an expert in comprehensive planning, policy analysis, zoning, transportation planning, and related areas in a variety of circuit courts throughout the State of Florida, including the Eighth Judicial Circuit in Alachua County, as well as in Federal Court and in Florida Administrative proceedings conducted under Chapter 120, F. S. Additional areas of expertise include traffic analysis, policy analysis, eminent domain-related planning issues, demographics, and statistical modeling.
Bill Morris, PE, LEED® AP, Vice President and Principal, has been practicing Civil Engineering since 1995. He joined Morris-Depew Associates in 1997 where he specializes in the design and permitting of residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional development projects. Having worked on sites varying in size from less than one acre to thousands of acres, he has successfully handled some of the more technically complicated entitlement scenarios to be found in Florida. Mr. Morris has represented a number of public sector clients such as the Town of Fort Myers Beach, Lee Memorial Hospital, San Carlos Estates Water Control District, the town of Lake Placid, and Lehigh Acres Municipal Services Improvement District. Mr. Morris’ experience also includes testifying as an accepted expert in a number of various forums in matters related to Civil Engineering.
Vice President and Principal Ryan Shute, PE, brings a great depth of knowledge with over 20 years’ experience in all types of land development projects. These include projects in the residential, commercial, public works, and institutional sectors. Mr. Shute is an expert in navigating a project through the parallel multiple regulatory agency approval processes beginning from conceptual design through construction completion. As a Project Manager in the Civil Engineering division, Mr. Shute is responsible for the design and permitting of all phases of transportation, storm water management, water distribution, and public works engineering projects. He is also responsible for regulatory agency contacts and client relations for individual projects.
Principal and Vice President of Surveying, Mark A. Hatfield, PSM, has provided professional surveying services in South Florida for 40 years. Mr. Hatfield and our Land Surveying Division are able to provide both the traditional and untraditional survey requests. These services include ALTA Boundary surveys, topographic and as-built surveys, subdivision, cemetery, and condominium platting. Services provided that are not in the “traditional” vein include Right-of-way acquisition and condemnation surveys, accident surveys, and expert witness testimony. Mr. Hatfield’s wide reaching survey experience ranges from residential lots to a 1,995-acre mine to 52,000 acres located in the Okaloacoochee Slough in Hendry County.
Tina Mayfield Ekblad, MPA, AICP, LEED® AP is a Vice President and Planning Director. Ms. Ekblad brings her expertise in strategic planning and project management, growth management, development permitting, comprehensive planning and zoning, floodplain management, economic development, and grant writing. She has also demonstrated her proficiency in policy analysis, demographics, and statistical modeling. Ms. Ekblad uses her expertise to assist clients with commercial, residential, industrial, and institutional development projects. As the Planning Director, Ms. Ekblad is responsible for the research and analysis of land use issues, preparing land use and zoning applications, and hearing exhibits. Responding to requests for additional information from permitting agencies, reviewing and determining design compliance with applicable regulations, and report preparation for land use and eminent domain related projects.
Michael Ekblad, PLA joined Morris-Depew & Associates in 2015 as the Director of Landscape Architecture. He brings extensive experience in the areas of landscape and irrigation design, hardscape design, site planning, and permitting to the team. He has considerable skills and knowledge of the community development process, community visioning, amenity design, lifestyle planning, and construction phase services to benefit our clients’ needs. In addition to his experience with commercial, industrial, and residential projects, Michael also has experience with environmental design and graphic design. His project history includes the development of attractive interpretative signage, the design of filter marshes, mitigation and native restoration areas, the development of environmental education materials, and the creation of community marketing graphics and illustrative site plans.
